Embedded sound files

M

mom3

I had a .wav file previously inserted in my ppt and the sound played fine
during the slide show on my computer. But when I decided to embed it inside
the ppt file, I found that the sound now won't play during the slide show.
What can I do to correct this problem?

Y

Yuki

what's the file size of the .wav, have you changed the defaut maximum size of
the embedded sound object supported by the Program?

S

Simmon

Hi.
What is the size of your sound file? If the file is more than 100 KB,
PowerPoint will build a link to the sound file (so once you move your
PowerPoint files to another computer, you have to move them together and
refresh the link or the file will be lost, consequentely always put your
sound file in the same folder with your powerpoint files), otherwise, the
file would be embedded ,all this is set by default.
I guess the sound you inserted is more than 100KB. so if you want to embed
you sound file, you have to change the setting. Tool>Option>General, change
the "Link sounds with the file greater than" setting ,fill in a number larger
than your file size.

M

mom3

My sound file is 49,971 kB. I already did the fix in the
"Tools/Options/General" to change it to the max. kB (50,000 kB), but the
music is still not playing with the .pps

I still have a version of the .pps with the sound file linked. However, the
sound file is not in the same folder as the .pps

What are my options now?

M

Michael Koerner

Put the sound file into the same folder as your presentation, and re-link
the file

Just did that.

I have one folder with .pps and .wav files where the sound is embedded -
sound DOES NOT play on this one. I have another folder where the sound is NOT
embedded, but "linked" and it DOES play. Can I now e-mail the folder with the
"linked" .wav file that plays just fine or does it have to be embedded?

Either way, how do I compress the sound file to get it across the internet?
It is 52 MB (which I understand is quite large).

M

Michael Koerner

You do not need to send the folder. you just need to send the PowerPoint
presentation and the sound file. I suggest you zip them up using a program
like WinZip. If you want to reduce the size of your sound file you will have
to re-sample it in a program lie Audacity which is a free download. Or
convert it to an MP3 or WMA file and reinsert it into your presentation.

If they unzip the presentation and sound file into the same folder then all
they have to do is click on the .ppt attachment. Keeping in mind if they
have the full version of PowerPoint the presentation will open in the edit
mode and not the slideshow mode which I think is what you want. If they have
the PowerPoint viewer, this is not a problem as it will open in the
Slideshow mode regardless. You can rename to .pps, or save your presentation
as a slideshow which will put the .pps extension so when double clicked, it
will open in the Slideshow mode

I zipped the folder containing the .pps and linked .wav file, but it is still
just too big to send to anyone. It only went down to 49 MB.

I need a better way to do this (without having to start from scratch, that
is). Is there any SIMPLE way to shrink the size of the .wav file so that both
files can be on their way down the information super highway?!

There are programs out there that will resample you wav file Doing a Google
search on "make wav files smaller" brings up 17,300,000 options. There is
also an option in Outlook Express that will split your file into packets,
and reassemble it at the other end
