Embedding documents in a controlled document

Hi..
Is there a general recommendation NOT to embed documents in a
controlled document?
I'm thinking from a management point of view, it may create additional
work if the embedded documents are updated, and the overall impact on
the control process surrounding document management?

I'm after a 'best practice' guideline here.
