embedding objects

Can someone explain how I can undo a feature in Outlook which makes it
impossible for me to edit documents in Word without 'embedding' everything.

I will be grateful for any information received.

Maybe, if you can explain exactly what feature this is and what editing
documents in Word has something to do with Outlook. I'm stumped.
