Empty Template file after failed save and Project Pro crash

Has anyone seen this?

An enterprise template was updated and upon the attempt to save the file, MS
Pro "encountered an exception" and crashed. This left the template in a
checked-out state and when it was brought back in, it was completely empty.

Any ideas WHY? This has happened a couple times before, only with template
files. Those times, the edits were trivial and easily redone to the back-up
copy but these changes were more substantial and avoiding redoing them is the
goal.

Any way I can fix this file?

BTW - this is a Project Server 2002 installation with an MS Proj Pro 2002
client as well.
