Enabling Macro's

I am getting an error message that macro's are not enabled in Word and
Excel. The instructions in the help file are not very clear or at least I
have not been able to correct this situation.

Two ???'s
(1) Is enabling macro's potentially harmful; and
(2) What is a non-techie process to enable the macros?

Tools -> Options -> Security.
Wack it down a notch so it prompts each time you open something that
contains macros.
