endnote - change of number format in Word 2003

D

David Parker

I am having trouble changing the format of the numbers in
endnotes in Word 2003. The default is to use small roman
numbers (i ii iii iv in italics) for endnotes (footnotes
use regular Arabic 1, 2, 3) I want to change endnotes to
use Arabic and on previous versions of Word it works well.
However, following all the instructions in the help file
which are the same as with previous versions, I cannot get
any change at all. It seems like a bug to me. Does anyone
know about this and can help?

Thanks,

David

thanks for this but the problem is that it will not even change from the default to arabic or anything else. It retains arabic if in a pre-existing document so I am experimenting with making a template based on a pre-existing document.

They still haven't fixed this in Word 2003? Sheesh! To change the default,
open Normal.dot and make the change there. See

I will report this as a bug--can't test it here because I haven't yet
upgraded to Word 2003.

I've got responses from two other MVPs that they are able to change the
number format both in a document and in Normal.dot, and that it remains the
default for new documents when changed in Normal.dot. Are you saying that
you cannot change it at all or that the change is not retained? If the
latter, are you saving Normal.dot when prompted? In either case, could the
problem be caused by an add-in of some sort?

I am not able to change it all - when I select Arabic in the Number format and press Apply, it reverts in the window and in the document itself to the default Roman

I have Citation 8 and WordWeb (not working since I installed Office2003).

Thanks,

My guess would be that Citation is interfering with Word's natural
processes.

I have followed up on your Citation suggestion and there is no difference when I unload and also remove the Citation template/addin from the Startup menu. But it works OK if I start Word with the /a switch but then I don't get the normal.dot template either. It seems that it is something in normal.dot.

In that case I would suggest that you rename Normal.dot and start fresh. You
can retrieve most of your customizations with the Organizer.
