Endnote/footnote autonumbering

I am inserting automatic endnotes into a document that already has some
footnotes both before and after where I want to insert a new reference. The
autonumbering is skipping from 5 to 7. I cannot get it to insert a 6. Any
ideas on what is going on. I have been revising a document and moving around
paragraphs with endnotes already inserted. They have been revising
themselves as they should but now I can't insert a new reference and get the
correct number.

Increase the document Zoom to 150% or 200% and inspect the footnote
references carefully. My experience is that, partly because of the bounding
box on the reference mark, a 5 and a 6 look exactly alike.

Hi Suzanne,

I did that already. Also I have about 17 endnotes but 6 is skipped. When I
try to insert a new endote after 5, the endnote self numbers as 7, as does
the footnote number within the text.

Would switching to code review mode help any? Is it possible there's a
phantom footnote somewhere that I can't see?

A couple of things to try:

1. If you're in Print Layout view, switch to Normal view. Then View |
Footnotes. This will open the footnote pane. If there *is* a footnote 6, you
may be able to see it. If you double-click on its reference number, you'll
be taken to the place in the document where the text reference is.

2. If you haven't already, display Hidden text to see if the reference
number is hidden.

3. Select Footnote as the browse object (using the palette accessed via the
button between the browse arrows at the bottom of the vertical scroll bar)
and click through the document from one footnote to the next. This may also
help you find the elusive footnote reference.

That sounds like it may work. I have been working in print layout view. The
document's at work so it will be Tues before I can check this out but it
gives me several leads. I didn't know about the footnote panel. Thanks,
I'll let you know if it doesn't work.

If you still have trouble, you could also try Edit > Goto... > Footnote > 6
