Endnotes

I have converted all my footnotes in this 160+ page doc to endnotes. Now
when I try to insert an index, the function is greyed out.

Matter of fact, it's like a sheet of glass over the entire 97 endnotes
section to the end. Ctrl-End takes me to the beginning of the endnotes, not
after the end of endnotes to the end of the doc and so I'm hamstrung when it
comes to adding the Table of Indices after the endnotes.

It's probably related, but after I mess around with the settings to try to
fix this and close, I can't reopen the doc at all. "The file cannot be
opened because there are problems with the contents." Details informs me
"Unspecified error; Location: Part: /word/footer5.xml, line:2, column 583."

This is scary because it is slowly wiping out all my work.

Thank goodness I've saved five backups of this ... but now I've lost two
day's work so far.

I'm copying it to a file called "test" and using that for the time being
until this is solved.

Very helpful. Thank you.

In any case, as you suggested, I have had to drop back two days' work and
convert the endnotes to footnotes. Of course, this requires me to reposition
all my figures and captions ... what a hassle.

Hopefully, I won't have any more of those dreaded "unable to open" messages.

I think I'll call this procedure, "The Dean Protocol".

Thanks again.

What an honour! ;-)
But really I cannot take the kudos for only pointing you to a website that
many others have contributed to. Glad this article helped you though.
When you say reposition your figures and captions, have you applied the
formatting attribute of Keep with next to the figure' style (if you have
captions after the figures that is) , then they will always stay together.
You can use Replace function to do this quickly. Open Replace (Ctrl+H) type
^g in the find, leave replace empty but click on the More button, Format,
Paragraph, Line and Page Breaks, click on the Keep with Next box till you get
a black tick. The replace All if you are brave, or Find NExt Replace as
appropriate. Note this will only work if the Figures are In Line With Text
and note floating.
All the best

I am tempted to rant at MSFT for putting endnotes into a frozen mode when we
all know the index is last in the work but impossible to include due to the
endnote "frozen" mode. Must be missing something, but it doesn't matter any
more ... I'm back to footnotes.

Pretend the above is all in caps.

Thanks

.... and thanks for holding off the krauts until we finally got into the war
.... II, I mean.

You must not have read the referenced article, which explains how to put the
endnotes before the index (or index after the endnotes).
