I remember in past versions of Excel, you could enter a formula in a chart text box. The formula could refer to a cell in the underlying worksheet. But for the life of, I can't remember how I used to do this. Does this feature still exist in Excel 2004, ver 11.5.3, and if so, how is the formula added?

Sure, just add the text box, and in the formula bar type an = and then click
on the cell whose contents you want to appear in the text box.
