Enter Return Tab Problems

I download some old books from some sites.

Invariably they have a "different" format than I want.

I have to go line by line to get the sentences to follow each other without
leaving a ton of white space at the end of each part sentence.

I have tried paste special "unformatted text".

I have tried "clear formatting" without luck.

Under "reveal formatting" there is a "return" sign without a tab showing on
the bar above.

What can be done?
