Entering Formula into Merge Cells Question

:) Here is the situation.

Merged S6 through u6 into one cell.
Merged s7 through u7 into one cell.
Merged s8 through s8 into one cell.

Now I want to enter a formula to subtract the middle line from th
first line.

I tried =sum(s6-s7) and =sum(s6-u7) and neither of these worked.

What is the correct formula?
