Entering Numbers

We have a template that has a custom format on the Quantity column.
Normally, we do not have to type a leading "=" or "+" sign when entering an
algabraic expression--the cell simply diplays, for example, 18, if the user
typed:

2*9 <CR>

A user, editing an old worksheet, which might have different formatting than
our template, as the templates have evolved, displays

2*9

in the cell. I tried a Paste Special of the Formats and then a full copy
from the template cell to the target with no success. Eventually, I was
forced to copy the old worksheet to a new file based on the template, which
works, but I'd like to understand what the issue was and why it worked. Can
anyone help?

Thank you.

That is not a format issue.
Select Tools -> Options -> Transitions -> and check Transition Formula Entry.

That is actually at the worksheet level... That is one of my pet peaves with
Tools -> Options is that it sometimes sets global options and sometimes sheet
options. It should be a bit more intuative how much scope each of those check
boxes and such have...
