how do i enter text down instead of across the cell to make it bigger

If you want to rotate the text, then Format/ Cells/ Alignment/ Orientation
If you want
A
B
C
down a cell, then use Alt Enter between lines.

The other option you might be looking for is to format the cell with wrapped
text. It's in the Alignment tab of Format Cells.
