You can't split a database.

You'll need to move messages off the Exchange server to folders "On My
Computer". The Entourage 2004 & 2008 database has no size limit, just a
limit to the number of items in the Entourage database: 2 million database
items.

AutoArchive Exchange Account to "On My Computer"

Move all e-mail older than 60 days from your Exchange account folders to
archive folders within the "On My Computer" folder tree.

Note this is broken in Leopard but there is a link on the page for a $10
third party solution.

Diane,

Since there is no size limit, is there a point at which the database will become to large and you will notice a decrease in performance?

I ask because my databases are usually around 5GB+ dealing with professional photos and emailing them back and forth between my designers all over the country. We are looking into making an FTP solution but that is way off yet.

Once we get over 6GB things start to go slow, databases get corrupted and all kinds of weird things start to happen. I already posted a new question today (Feb. 9th, '09) about this problem.

Is there anything you know of that would cause this as it has been a problem both under 10.4 and 10.5. Thanks!

That would depend on your hardware and RAM.
I ask because my databases are usually around 5GB+ dealing with professional
photos and emailing them back and forth between my designers all over the
country. We are looking into making an FTP solution but that is way off yet.

Options:

1) Remove incoming attachments with one of the "remove attachment" scripts.
They will save, remove and link the saved files to the message, so you can
open the file directly from the message.

<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/script/fav_scripts.html#favscript17>

<http://scriptbuilders.net/files/saveattachments20041.0.0.html>

Also remove your outgoing attachments with a rule. This is assuming your
outgoing attachments are stored elsewhere on your computer. No need to have
them duplicated and filling up your database. You do need to keep some sort
of note on these files to associate them with the email. Unlike the remove
incoming attachments, the rule doesn't link to the attachment.

<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/rules/example/rule001.html>

2) Archive your mail more frequently to another Identity. We can discuss
this option if you select to do this.

It's not the software, it's the hardware. Select one of the options above
and you'll find Entourage zippy again.

BTW, have you checked out DropBox? They offer 2GB free. Windows, Mac, and
Linux

Dropbox - Home - Secure backup, sync and sharing made easy.

Just a thought - possibly you should look at a file storage/sharing
system such as Box.net or Dropbox. This would allow you to save these
files you want to share on these servers and share them thus saving
you from using e-mail which is inefficient for file sharing of this
size. It would also not bloat Entourage with these files. I like
Box.net and use that one but Dropbox is nice in that it shows you your
dropbox folder in a Finder window so it appears like any folder on the
Mac in the Finder.
