In the list view of the address book, sorted by last name; when I type A, B, or C to manually find a contact the cursor goes to the top of the list? what is my problem? if I type any other letter it goes to the contacts with the last name starting with what ever letter I push.

Works for me. It's either your Identity or your User's folder. Let's do some
testing.

1) export your contacts as Entourage archive (.rge) file.
2) create a new Identity in Entourage (no need to enter account info)
3) import the .rge file and test
* Does it work in the new Identity? If yes, then rebuilding might fix the
problem.
* If it doesn't work in the new Identity, then drag your.rge file to
Shared. Go to System Preferences --> Create a New User in Accounts. Switch
to the New User by logging out/in or use Fast User Switching. Open Entourage
in a new Identity and import the .rge file and test.

What did you find?

How to rebuild:

Make a duplicate in the Finder first as additional backup. A rebuild does
make a duplicate, but sometimes in the process the original and backup get
merged resulting in total disaster. It's rare but it happens.
