entourage continually crashes, database size >10GB

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Processor: Intel Email Client: pop since my database has grown larger than 6GB (now >10GB), entourage crashes several times a day - seemingly without reason. unlike outlook, where i can move messages out of the inbox .pst into a separate filed messages .pst, entourage does not appear to have this functionality.

this is frustrating as i wind up wasting huge amounts of time using the glacially sloooooow database utility to verify/compress/rebuild the database over and over again - only to have the same thing happen a day or two later.

in my business i have to keep all messages for non-repudiation so trashing old messages is not an option.

does anyone out there have the same problem? does anyone have any suggestions? i'm getting ready to throw this thing out the frickin' window!

thanks in advance.

This is what I do to save emails but put some order in the system.

Each year, in January, I export the Entourage Database to an Archive.

Create a New Identity normally labelled the previous year eg: 2009

Log onto new identity and Import everything from the archive.

Log Out of new identity and back into Main Identity.

Delete ALL emails from the previous year and continue as normal.

If I want emails from 2008 or 2009 then I just switch identities to 2008 or
2009.

I¹ve just checked in the Microsoft User Data folder in Documents Office
2008 IdentitiesFolder and the Database size for each of the Old Identities
ie: 2008 / 2009 is less than 3 GB.

Might solve your problem. Let us know if it does.

It is not normal for a database to grow like this.

You can export folders as MBOX files or as Entourage archive (.rge) file.

See these movies for dealing with MBOX and .rge files.

Sometimes rebuilding the database can cause more problems than it fixes.
It¹s always advised to make a backup first in case the rebuild fails. A
rebuild does make a duplicate, but sometimes in the process the original and
backup get merged resulting in total disaster. It¹s rare but it happens.

I suggest you look at switching from POP to eithe IMAP or a hosted Exchange
account. This way your mail will always be safe on the server and can be
accessed by multiple computers.

I suggest you create a new Identity.

How to manually move your data. (when import fails and/or you need to move
to a new Identity same version or revert to an older version)

I have the same problem. Entourage crashes continually several times a day and rebuild does not solve the problem. My database is nowhere near 1gb in size. Entourage worked really well on my IMAC but not so on me new macbook pro. It's basically crap....

What version of Entourage and the OS? If Office 2008 and Snow Leopard, did
you remove the duplicate fonts? How did you move your Identity over? Have
you tried to rebuild? Under File > Export, try exporting all items as .rge
file. Does it export without an error?

Testing in a new User will quickly tell you if the problem is system wide or
if it¹s your User¹s folder that contains the problem. Move your Identity to
the Shared folder. Go to System Preferences --> Create a New User in
Accounts. Switch to the New User by logging out/in or use Fast User
Switching. First test Entourage in a new blank Identity. If there are no
problems, drag from Shared (it actually copies) your database and open in
the new Identity. Let us know what you find.
