When you say running a sync I'm not sure what that means - Entourage
to iCal or to a handheld or??? and how did you do this and then what
happened.

Regardless, I'll just post it if it applies to so that you get
reliable syncs with Entourage. Its a workaround:

First, you may need to follow Apple's support article TS1627 following
either the Leopard or Snow Leopard instructions for resetting sync
services.

There are numerous issues with Sync Services and Entourage and for
that matter other third party programs that use sync services. Using
the Apple apps iCal and Addressbook are fairly reliable but may not
meet one's needs. There is a workaround that has been employed in
Entourage for over a year.

It involves:

- having only one module at any time turned on in Ent08 sync serv prefs
- generally, keep your most active module turned on which is probably
calendars
- when you need to sync with another module turn the current active
module off and then the one you want to sync with on then reverse when
done

For first initial syncs to establish sync:

1. Backup iCal, Addressbook and Entourage's main identity
2. Delete the Entourage calendar in iCal if it exists (if it is the
only calendard create a temp cal to delete ent)
3. Turn on sync serv prefs and click a module and choose combine - in
the case of calendar an Entourage cal will be created in iCal (if you
had to create a temp cal in iCal delete it)

Now just use your computer as normal switching modules only to sync
them. Note a delete on the handheld of say a contact and you need to
switch Ent to Contacts as the active first otherwise a delete will
only be combined and added back in.

Thiis workaround is fairly reliable. Snow Leopard introduced a couple
of new issues but it still seems reliable.

Kerry, I have a similar issue. MS Sync crashes, no matter what I do. I
have cleaned all caches, app support, reset iSync, you name it.
Wheneven I tick any of the sync boxes in Entourage and activate iCal,
i get the MS Sync services has encountered a problem message. Thanks
for your help as I can no longer sync between no matter what
devices...! Dick

OK, when you say MS I'm guessing you mean Microsoft and not Missing
Sync is that right?

If we're talking Microsoft this could be due to any number of things.
Are you running Leopard or Snow Leopard. There are new sync issues in
Snow Leopard that is really adding to what is already problematic. I'm
going to assume Leopard but even if it is Snow Leopard try this and
see what happens. First, back up you active Microsoft user identity
which is generally the Main Identity in Documents fold Microsoft user
data. Make sure Entourage is closed. I usually just right click the
Main Identity folder and choose compress. Now you'll have a zip file
of your current identity that you can restore should this cause
further problems by double clicking the zip file of course deleting
the main identity first (only done if you need to revert to the
backup). Second backup iCal. Once you've backed up iCal delete the
iCal calendar Entourage and wait a few seconds for sync services to
clean this up. Go back to Entourage prefs sync services, click
Calendar and tasks and at the prompt choose combine. You should see a
new iCal calendar created with all you data from Entourage. If this
comes through correctly just add a test event in Entourage and make
sure it appears in iCal (can take a few seconds). If you are still get
an error message MS Sync Services has encountered a problem you most
likely have a bad record in your DB.

If you have a bad record, instead of starting with the sledge hammer
approach, first run the check database utility by launching Entourage
from the dock holding the option key down. Run verify. If it says your
DB is running correctly that can be good and not necessarily so. If it
does say your DB is faulty you will need to run rebuild (rebuild is
very flaky and unreliable so I hope you have backups prior to this
current DB just in case rebuild doesn't work). OK, lets assume the
above didn't work, verify says the db is fine, you might still have a
bad record. if you sync'd recently and it was successful do you recall
entering anything since. If you do, delete it or all that you entered
as its pretty hard to tell what might be bad although if you try to
open the entry and it doesn't that's the corrupt record. Try sync
again if there is a corrupt record.

Before I go any further, let me know the answers to the questions I
posed, how the deletion of the iCal calendar and the restore went when
you told Entourage to sync using combine went and if that went fine
then all is well. If you had to try the stuff in para 2 tell me how
that went. There are some steps beyond this we can try but I don't
want to go there till I get the info.

Remember, sync services is very flaky and not only with Entourage but
with other products. Make sure you have backups especially if you're
using Entourage. Finally, you will always be able to sync from iCal
and Addressbook but ideally I'm sure you want to get your new info
from Entourage to those so the above is the first starting point.

Thanks Kerry for your elaborate reply. I am getting help from a MS
support lady now as well. I have gone throug your first steps with her
and that did nothing. Then she asked me to setup a new account and try
again - guess what, no problem. I am awaiting next steps from her but
your help is greatly appreciated. I had already gone through a DB
check (was ok) and rebuild, but that did not change anything.. iCal
and AB are empty and Entourage is safely backed up. BTW, I am on
10.6.1 - by upgrade. Another things that bothers me is when I try to
import my Entourage contacts (exported in a txt file) in Address Book,
it crashes! Any idea what's wrong there ? Upgrading to SL is not the
best thing I did recently :) Thanks again - Dick

This sounds like corrupt data. Most likely this is the cause of your sync
crashes.

Visually scan the text file of your contacts to see if you see anything that
stands out as different.

Next option, Open the Apple Address Book and create vcf cards of all your
contacts. This will allow you to bring them into a new test Entourage
Identity in small batches to find the corruption.

Once you get the contacts into Entourage, use File > Export as Entourage
archive (.rge) file only contacts. Do they export OK? If yes, mark them with
a category as "tested" then do the next batch.

I suspect one of the fields has incorrect data inserted. I've seen phone
numbers for example in the name field or the email address field. You can
imagine what this does when it's synced.

Let us know what you find.
