Entourage downloads ALL messages repeatedly

Entourage 2004 suddenly started downloading ALL 1200 messages from my
Yahoo Mail Plus POP account every time I click "Send & Receive." I had
already downloaded ALL of these messages with Entourage 2004 (or
Entourage v.X previously); Entourage seems to be reading all these
messages as new. I click "Send & Receive" and the progress bar says
"Messages to be recieved: 1200" and Entourage starts downloading them.
I use fully-updated Mac OS 10.4.3 and fully-updated MS Office 2004 for
Mac. I have not changed any of the settings on Entourage or Yahoo
Mail. I tried deleting the Yahoo Mail account and adding it back in,
but to no avail. I accessed the Yahoo Mail account through my browser
and every message was marked as Read. I checked the POP mail settings
in Entourage and they're correct. I've used Entourage 2004 for several
months now and this Yahoo Mail account for several years. This is the
first time this happened, and does not happen with my Earthlink or
Gmail accounts--just Yahoo.

I think I've fixed the problem by letting Entourage download all 1200+
messages and then manually deleting them. Entourage now grabs only new
messages. I've been told a corrupt Entourage data base probably caused
this. If so, letting Entourage download all emails on the Yahoo Mail
server seems to have repaired the data base.

Nick,

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, it seems to happen a couple
times/month. I've contacted the ISP, and they blame it on Entourage. I
haven't tried MS tech support (they'll probably blame it on my ISP). Any
ideas what could corrupt the database, and/or how to fix it?

Nic,

I've had this happen more times than I'd like. I finally turned off "Leave a
copy of each message on the server."

I'm afraid I don't know for certain what caused the corruption in my
database. I suspect it stems from problems I've had with my TiBook
ever since Apple replaced the hard drive under Apple Care. Ever since
then I've had problems with permissions and library folders. I was
using OS 10.2 when I myahaard drive crashed, and Apple installed OS
10.3 on the new hard drive. Permission problems, many spinning beach
balls. I then upgraded to OS 10.4; same thing. Apple said to Archive
and Install OS 10.4, but to no avail. I've used the disk repair
utility at every step, and Apple ran a program called software bash at
every step. Now they say I need to Install and Erase. I haven't taken
this step yet. A local Apple-certified tech person thinks Apple may
have installed a defective hard drive.

I noticed in another discussion topic in this group someone referred to
a database utility: Applications>MS Office 2004>Office>Database
Utility. I ran this after I downloaded all my Yahoo Mail messages, and
it said my Entourage data base was OK. Perhaps it corrupt before and
downloading all the Yahoo Mail messages fixed it; I don't know for
certain.

Hope this helps.

I, too, have had this problem for a very long time (and though a couple
of different versions of OS X). So I doubt it has anything to do with
a hardware problem. Would be too coincidental that we both had the same
hardware problem. At one point I went through a rebuild of the
database and that didn't eliminate it either. I finally "resolved" it
by clicking on "delete from server" for all messages except those I
wanted left on the server. I found that even by deleting the messages
in Entourage, they weren't always deleted on the server.
