Entourage hangs on startup

Hi,

I'm using Mac Office Suite 2008 for Mac 10.6.3. When I launch
Entourage, the program hangs (the spinning icon appears and never goes
away) and I'm not able to use it. My administrator re-installed the
office suite and it still exhibits this behavior. What advice do
people have for troubleshooting this problem?

Thanks, - Dave

Have you tried rebuilding the database?
Simply launch Entourage pressing the Option key down to trigger the
database Utility.

Hi, Yes, I tried this. Then Quit out of that utility, and then
relaunched the program. It is stuck on "Now updating Inbox" in the
lower right. - Dave

Do you have an Exchange account?
If yes, I'd try getting in Offline mode immediately after launching,
then I'd trash the Exchange cache (select the root of the account in
the folder list, Ctrl click to get to the properties where you can
trash the cache).

Yes, I have an exchange account. I figured out how to get into
offline mdoe, but how do I clear the cache? When I rebuilt my
database, didn't that clear my cache for me? - Dave

No it didn't.
To clear the local Exchange cache, simply follow the instruction I gave
in my previous message:
Select the root of the account in the folder list, Ctrl click to get to
the properties where you can trash the cache

Check for a bad message if clearing the cache didn¹t help:

Hold down the Shift key when launching Entourage to disable schedules. Set
Entourage to work offline. Checking for the bad message might be easier to
do in your browser by moving all messages out of the Inbox then move back in
small batches to find the culprit. Try downloading in Entourage after you
move back each group of messages.

You could then turn off Preview Pane and check the server looking for the
suspect message.

If you have POP accounts, you'd do it by using your Webmail account or use
Allow Online Access in the Options window of the account settings. Next,
select the server icon now appearing in the Folders List and turn off
Preview Pane.

If IMAP, Exchange or Hotmail just check your Inbox and folders affected with
Preview Pane turned off.

Delete the message (which actually marks it for Deletion from the server),
connect to the server (Send & Receive All).

Corentin, I do not see a "Clear Cache option" when I Ctrl+Click on the
"root" folder, which I assume in my case is "Main Identity" --

Diane, Via Webmail, I deleted a bunch of messages and emptied my
"Deleted Items" folder, but upon starting up, the program is stuck in
"Now updating Deleted Items".

Grateful for continued thoughts, - Dave

Thanks for the capture: it helps understanding what's going on.
I was referring to the root of the account in Entourage.
In the main window, on the left, you can see the list of folders for
your account (inbox, sent itmes, trash, etc).
The root of this structure usually has the name of your account. That's
what you have to Right-click to get to the properties.

Posterity will note that the way I solved this was to change to
Entourage Web services edition and now everything works fine. Thanks,

Well thanks for posting back. It might help other users in the same situation.
The EWS version of Entourage is a great improvement over the regular
version (providing your account supports it as it only works with
Exchange 2007+).
