Entourage Quits when I attempt to change the color of a font.

B

Benny1955

I'm using an iMac Intel 2.0 GHz with MAC OS X 10.5.1
All Apple Software updates have been installed as of the date of this
posting.

I have installed the most recent Office 2004 update(11.3.9).
I have verified and compacted my Entourage database with no noted
problems.

Entourage continues to quit unexpectedly whenever I attempt to change
the color of a font.

Is there a quick fix for this?
Is this a noted problem with any of the most recent updates from
Microsoft or Apple?

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Entourage continues to quit unexpectedly whenever I attempt to change
the color of a font.

Remove this font cache file:

~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Office Font Cache (11)

I removed the Office Font Cache (11) but Entourage still quits
whenever I attempt to change the color of the font.

Did you quit and restart your computer? It's possible that you need to clear
out other font caches. Try Cache Out X.

I've read and followed this string of instructions, removing font
cache (11) and other caches using CacheOut, but Entourage still quits
upon color selection. If I open any of the other office programs
(word, excel, and PPT) i see the "office font cache (11)" file
reappear in finder. I'm using Entourage 11.3.6, Excel 11.3.7, Word
11.3.8 and OS X 10.5. Everything seems to be updated. If i go
through and remove the font cache (11) file for each program after it
opens, and re open the program, the excution pauses, displaying the
message "optimizing font menu performance..." on the small logo screen
before the application opens. After this happens, the "office font
cache (11)" file is visible in finder again...

any help?

Finding solutions for Leopard is new, but in all troubleshooting you need to
determine where the problem is located. By eliminating sources you can track
down the problem and eventually a solution.

1. Test in a new User. In System Preferences create a new User. Switch Users
and test. If the problem goes away then it's in your User's folder. If it
doesn't go away then it's system files. This would require updating with
combo or doing an "Archive & Install" and sometimes even an "Erase &
Install".

2. If the problem went away in the new User, then it's in your User's
folder. First eliminate your database by creating a new Identity in
Entourage. If the problem goes away then it's your database. You'll need to
export your data into a new Identity. If the problem still exists then it's
not your database but a conflict in your User's folder. You'll have to find
the pref file that's the culprit.

Diane offers excellent counsel.

On my G5 PowerPC Mac running OS 10.5.1 and Office 11.3.9, my problem with
the font color button was solved after I turned off ALL Office programs,
including Entourage's Notifications; manually trashed Office Font Cache
(11), shut down the Mac and re-started.

Incidentally, I found Leopard Cache Cleaner an outstanding application not
only for cleaning caches but also for a number of routine and emergency
procedures. I had used Cache Out X years ago, but found Tiger Cache Cleaner
much more stable then and far more versatile and powerful. For OS 10.5.x,
one has to use Leopard Cache Cleaner (currently version 4.0.3).

I added the part about quitting all to the FAQ on this problem. Before I
just had trash the preference file.

Here's the link for Leopard Cache Cleaner ($8.99). It does a lot more than
clean caches. Includes ClamAV antivirus built in.
