The real story for this client is that you somehow obtained an illegal copy
of a beta version, and that particular beta has now timed out and is
invalid, so you won't be able to open it with any means.

Come back when it's been released officially and you won't have any problem.

Hi Ludovic, just a few thoughts here.

In my experience with an EXCHANGE SERVER I did the following regarding
connecting via IMAP and using the LDAP for email name resolution.

goto "EDIT ACCOUNT" for your user you hav set up. (cntl-click)

Personal INformation:
a) name: the name you want to appear on your companies email EXCHANGE
for the "FROM;"
b) email address: the email address you will use "(e-mail address removed)"
(not the EXCHANGE ID!)

RECEIVING MAIL:
a) Account ID: userid {this is your user id to get onto you MS
network of exchaneg server]
b) password: your_password [his is your pwd to get onto you MS network
of exchange server]
c) IMAP server: IP_address or fully.qualified.name of your EXCHANGE
server [my.exchange.server.com]
d) "click here for advanced receiving options" - left as defaulted (no
options)

1) "the imap server" - well I assumed that the OUTLOOK EXCHANGE server
supports iMAP (and SMTP) as the doc says. There is plent of info in on
the net about it. I knew the ip address/name of one or more of the
corporate servers having learnt this from my troubling days.

2) used nslookup with a 'set type=mx" to locate the main exchange
server in my corporations global network whilst connected via the
CISCO VPN CLIENT.

From the little I know, IMAP is for , authenication, READING and
deleting and some organisation of emails. The Entourage client (like
the OSX mail.app) defauots to using PORT 143. for this activity.

3) I'm sure this is true for you but just see if the exchange server
supports iMAP connection thus:

[warwicks-Computer:~] warwick% telnet xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx 143
Trying xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx ...
Connected to xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx.
Escape character is '^]'.
* OK Microsoft Exchange IMAP4rev1 server version 5.5.2653.23
(my_company_exchange_server.com) ready

c login warwick network_password
c OK LOGIN completed.
e select inbox
* 646 EXISTS
* 0 RECENT
* FLAGS (\Seen \Answered \Flagged \Deleted \Draft)
* OK [PERMANENTFLAGS (\Seen \Answered \Flagged \Deleted \Draft)]
* OK [UNSEEN 315] Is the first unseen message
* OK [UIDVALIDITY 932] UIDVALIDITY value.
e OK [READ-WRITE] SELECT completed.
d logout
* BYE Microsoft Exchange IMAP4rev1 server version 5.5.2653.23 signing
off
d OK LOGOUT completed.
Connection closed by foreign host.

if you can connect via iMAP then proceed else,,, use POP or give up
and go back to outlook2000 or windows under VPC.

SENDING mail:
a) SMTP server: IP_address or fully.qualified.name of your EXCHANGE
server [my.exchange.server.com]
b) "click here for advanced receiving options" - left as defaulted (no
options) or try setting your account name as---->
ACCOUNT NAME: you may have to try and use "domain_name\logonid"
instead of just the logonid - depends if your company is using domain
name.. just trial and error.

BUT.... be very careful that you CAN send message here. It uses port
25 by default so you have to see if this server supports this. Here's
how...

SENDING emails may be tricky. I LEARNED THAT iMAP doesn't support (or
have in its protocol) the ability to accept SENT emails so you will
have to use SENDMAIL on port 25. Entourage and MAIL.APP assume that
you will connect to a server that supports SENDMAIL. So you should
test that your server supports SEND as follows

[warwicks-Computer:~] warwick% telnet xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx 25
Trying xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
Connected to another.exchanger.server.com.
Escape character is '^]'.
220 another.exchanger.server.com ESMTP Sendmail 8.12.9/8.12.0; Tue, 8
Jul 2003 15:50:59 -0600 (MDT)
helo
501 5.0.0 helo requires domain address
quit
221 2.0.0 another.exchanger.server.com closing connection
Connection closed by foreign host.
[warwicks-Computer:~] warwick%

I had to try many EXCHANGE servers until I found one that accepted a
SENDMAIL or connection on port 25.

Once I found one I just used that address as the SENDer for OUTGOING
emails

I omitted al the SSL etc security parameters and it worked... I was
delighted.. it is so quick!

If you're part of a marketing beta program or something like that, you need
to contact the people directly in charge of the program if your current
beta build has timed out. They should be sending you a new one. No one here
can do anything about it. In fact no one anywhere can do anything about a
timed-out copy.
