entry page

Greetings,

Using FrontPage 2002 , for the first time, to publish a website today
I ran into a snag that I hope someone can help with.

The site I'm designing is going to a domain name. I was told that the
main page must be called index. Which is fine as I'd already done
that. However I also have an "entry page" that I wanted people to land
on first.

The address takes me automatically to the index page.

Any suggestions? Was I as clear as mud?

The page that is opened first is index.html. If you wish to have your
"entry page" opened first then:

(1) Name the "entry page" as index.html
(2) Rename your main page to other than index.html.

You might consider what the purpose of your "entry page" will be. Many
pages that I have seen usually state "Welcome To My Web Site" and then
"Click Here to Enter". If that is what you have in mind, I suggest you
rethink it. Why not go directly to the main page and save your visitors the
nuisance of going through this unnecessary step?

Thanks for your comments Colin.

I did try that but then my shared borders and navigation buttons don't
show up.

While I understand your sentiments, the entry page has a java applet
and information that we want on that page.

I appreciate your help and speedy reply though.

I gave up a long time ago working with the buttons and navigation scheme of
FrontPage so I can't offer any help there.

This particular newsgroup gets very little traffic. You might try the
following which is quite active and has several people who give good
guidance:

news:microsoft.public.frontpage.client

Rename your entry page to index.htm and your main page to main.htm or any
other name you like. Make sure you update the links. Your first page has
to be index.htm.

Jerry, if I wasn't a happily married grandmother of 3 1/2 (one on the
way) I'd kiss you!! Renaming worked. What I was doing was "save as".
Totally different thing as I found out the hard way.

Don't you just love the kindness of strangers.

I know you solved this already, oni, but in the future (or for others):

if Shared Borders and Navigation aren't showing up, you haven't added the
new page to the Navigation yet. Which is what happened here because the
entry page wasn't part of the FrontPage web.

There are a few ways to do that, so just consult the help file. But that is
what happens to borders/nav when a page is on your site but not really
"part" of your site's navigation.

Thanks Robb,

I'll keep that in mind for next time.

Everything is up now and running and the church is thrilled with the
job. Woo Hoo!!!
