I just purchased Office Student version. This comes housed in a hard plastic
case, that even comes in a hinged format. Microsoft needs to become a
responsible vendor. This plastic packaging is a blight on the environment.
Microsoft promotes Earth Day - they need to take it to heart.

The case is a storage device for your Office CD.
Why would you want to throw it away?
In fact, it's recyclable!

I think if consumers were offered the choice of not receiving the packaging
material, especially when products are purchased from Amazon (which is where
I got mine), many would prefer not to receive the extra plastic. You might

Perhaps if you consider environmental AND the personal cost of replacing
the disk due to damage, the effects you refer to are actually non-existent.

It's for storing the installation media, license info, product key, etc
together -- not throwing it away. It's not just 'fancy packaging' it's a
storage container. Throwing it away is like throwing away a storage case for
specialty tool set that uses several parts. Invariably, if you throw away
the case then you're bound to some the parts. So if folks are throwing it
away then, just like that tool set, I'd say the majority will be in the
newsgroups at point asking how to replace their installation media because
it's missing or broken and/or how to obtain a new product key because that's
been lost too. That's what seems to occur for previous versions were
packaged in a cardboard box, anyway.
