EPS files not working

Monica

I'm using .EPS files from Illustrator CS to Word XP and
they won't view in Word. Anthing I can do to fix this?
Other images work without problems.

Encapsulated postscript files can be created with or without a preview.
What you see on screen in Word is the preview. What you see printed
is EPS (even if you can't see the .eps images on screen in Word, they
should print okay to a postscript-capable printer). So in Illustrator,
you need to figure out how to Save As or Export To .eps with .tif or
..wmf preview.

Thanks for your response. I've saved the EPS files with
an 8-bitt Tiff preview in Illustrator. Any other
suggestions?

I recently began using the combination of Illustrator CS and Word 2004 for
Mac, and find that my previews are reversed (negatives). It seems to be
limited to Illustrator, as other EPS-generating applications preview okay.
Also, Illustrator CS previews in other apps (FrameMaker in Classic, InDesign)
are okay.

Nope, that's all I ever have to do to make .eps files work. Can
Illustrator save as one of the other graphic formats you're using that
do work? Another way to paste might be to select the graphic in
Illustrator, copy it to the Windows clipboard, and paste special into
Word as an Illustrator object, picture, or enhanced metafile.

Hi Monica,

Starting with Word 2002 the previews are basically ignored in
Word when MS switched to GDI+ for graphics rendering.

Illustrator EPS (single page postscript) do seem to have more
difficulties and the suggestion you received to use the clipboard
may work, although you may also try printing to a Postscript printer
from the graphics app and choosing an EPS file as the output format
and see if that works for you in Insert=>Picture from File in Word.

If you can't get a preview in the Insert=>Picture dialog it's possible
that either no or an outdated EPS Import filter is in play.

If you're seeing no graphics display but they print correctly in a
Word document check the settings for Picture Placeholders in
Tools=>Options=>View

The EPS import filter that MS added around Word 2002 inexplicably only
supports Level 1 and 2 PostScript, whereas your Illustrator version
probably uses Level 3 features. But, since it was included to enable
display of the actual EPS graphic instead of the preview, chances are
it won't display any previews.

Won't Illustrator's WMF or EMF export work for your needs? EMF is the
more powerful format by the way, but we regular hear complaints about
the quality of Illustrator's own WMF/EMF export.

FYI, my company makes commercial software to batch convert EPS to EMF
and other vector graphics (and raster image) formats. Might be worth
to look at to overcome these issues.
