Equation Editor not opening

Equation Editor is quite spotty. Sometimes it works fine, and on other days I get two windows that pop up instead.

"The application Equation Editor quite unexpectedly." and

"The server application, source,file, or item cannot be found. Make sure the application is properly installed, and that it has not been deleted, moved, or renamed."

This is frustrating! I am a math teacher and grad student and I use this a lot! It will work for extensive periods, and then just quit. Sometimes 30 seconds after it was working. Sometimes it works to close Word and then relaunch the whole program, but tonight not even that is working.

I have reinstalled Equation Editor and the entire Word program, but that does not seem to help.

Ideas?

Unless you run the Remove Office tool first, re-installing only makes things
worse on a Mac.

The things that get damaged are not program files, and they are not replaced
by a re-install. The program files are not replaced either, all things
being well, if they already exist. If for some reason they don't exist,
they are replaced with a mis-matched version, which gives exactly the kind
of trouble you already have.

Do all of the steps, in the order that they appear: the sequence matters.

I am guessing that your problem may be cured when you re-apply the Mac OS X
Combo Update, but it may also be permissions or preferences.
