equation editor -office 2003 ? software doesn't install from CD.

Philip

After a complete install from CD, the additional tool "equation editor" is
not present. Even after following the instructions on how to activate the
tool.

Not sure what instructions you're talking about, but quoting from
Word 2003 Help:

You may need to install Equation Editor.

How?

If you originally installed Microsoft Office from a network file
server or from a shared folder, you must install Equation Editor
from that location. If you installed Office from a CD-ROM, you
must install Equation Editor from the disc.

1. Quit all programs.
2. Do one of the following:
* If you run Microsoft Windows 2000, double-click the
Add/Remove Programs icon in Control Panel.
* If you run Microsoft Windows XP, click Add or Remove
Programs in Control Panel.
3. In the Currently installed programs box, click the listing
for Microsoft Office or Microsoft Word, depending on whether you
installed Word as part of Office or as an individual program, and
then click Change.
4. On the Maintenance Mode Options screen, click Add or
Remove Features, and then click Next.
5. If a Custom Setup screen appears, select the Choose
advanced customization of applications check box, and then click
Next.
6. In the list of features to install, click the expand
indicator (+) next to Office Tools.
7. Click the arrow next to Equation Editor, and then click
Run from My Computer.
8. Click Update.
9. Restart Word.

How do you know it's not present? Equation Editor isn't a stand-alone
utility. You have to add it within one of the Office applications (generally
via Insert|Object|Microsoft Equation -- and note it's listed under the Ms,
not the Es.).

I guess I should have had a little more detail in my original post.

When initially installing the Office 2003 software from CD, I followed the
instructions as posted by Garfield (above).

An interesting note is that in the window where you indicate the components
that you want installed, some of the “small disk†icons that indicate the
option for component selection (“run from my computerâ€, “run all from my
computerâ€, “installed on first useâ€, and “not availableâ€) have a white
background and not the gray background. The gray components seem to be the
default “run from my computer.†The Equation Editor

I selected “run from my computer.â€

How do I know it was not installed?

Well, I am not confident that it is not installed, however, when I try to
Insert|Object in Microsoft Word, there are no objects that show on the panel.

I do recall when the software was installed, the installer indicated that it
could not get access to <some file> (name long forgotten), “Retry, abort.â€

I selected “retry†and the installation continued.

I am not sure what you are refering to when you say: "under Ms, not the Es."

Thanks.

Hi Phillip,

In some cases, including if you have a Corel WordPerfect product install the Insert=>Objects dialog will appear to be blank as some
of the object types are not given titles to display and the list is alphabetical. See if you can scroll down past the 'blank' area
in the Insert=>Objects list.

If 'Microsoft Equation 3.0' isn't in the object list (and if you're using the Norton or Adobe add-ins with Office the installer may
not be able to modify things correctly) you may want to try repairing the Office installation from Add/Remove Programs in the
Windows control panel as you mentioned an (undefined) error message.

You can also, in Word use Tools=>Customize=>Commands=>All Commands
and scroll down in the right hand box to 'Insert Equation' and drag that shortcut to the Insert menu and/or a toolbar to make it
more convenient to insert equations later on.

Thanks so much!

Yes, WordPerfect was pre-installed on the PC I installed Office after that.
There is a list of Empty descriptions, many! The list is there after the
blank entries.

I had uninstalled the Corel product that might have created the problem I
have now.

Thanks,
Philip.
