equation objects look funny

some days now when i try to insert equations from the equation editor, the equation symbols (>=+<, etc) are replaced by irrelevant symbols (not mathematical, just other symbols). when i try to edit it, it looks ok. i am using office xp on win xp
please help!!!!!!!!!!!!
