Equations disappear in Word 2000/XP when edited

Tom

I have a document from someone that has full of equations. The
equations were created with equation editor. When I open the document,
I can see all the equations perfectly. When I select it, I see the
black border and 6 resizing squares. But when I double-click (or
right-click and choose Edit) on the equation, the entire equation
disappears and I end up with a blank equation ready for editing (as if
I chose Insert/Object/Equation Editor 3.0). So I click out of the area
to revert back to non-editing mode, but after a few flashes, the
entire equation disappears. I can only retrieve it with CTRL-Z to
undo. Any subsequent equations that I add to this document can be
edited.

I've reinstalled Office 2000 and even installed Office XP, but it
still has problems. What's wrong with it? It also happens no matter
what machine I'm using. Am I missing a font? Am I low on resources
(not likely...)? Any help would be appreciated.
