Error 0167:BFF9DFFF

I keep getting the above error when trying to open an
excel spreadsheet. My PC works fine on all other
applications. I run windows 98 and gone into system
information, then system file checker. It stated that a
few files were corrupt. I coppied new files from Windows
98 disc but made no difference.

I've also deleted *.pwl files but still no joy.

When I get the above error my PC then hangs and have to
reboot a few times in order to get it working properly
again. This is until I go into an excel file. I have
coppied all my excel files to a laptop and they are
working fine. I have also run a virus check and again all
is fine.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Many thanks.

I don't know what causes the error, but since your workbooks are ok on another
pc, maybe it's excel or something that excel opens each time it starts.

Try opening excel in safe mode:
close excel
windows start button|Run
excel /safe

If excel doesn't successfully start, maybe reinstall of excel is in order.

If you're using xl2k or xl97, maybe....

If excel did start ok:

When you start in safe mode, excel won't load a bunch of stuff--including your
customized toolbars. This customized toolbar can get corrupted and cause
problems with excel.

Close excel.
windows start button|find
search for *.xlb
(look in hidden folders for hidden files).
The name and location will vary depending on your version of excel (and your
version of windows).

Rename all the *.xlb files you find to *.xlbOLD.

Then start up excel normally to test it. If it worked, then delete these
*.xlbOLD files. You can rebuild your customizations at your leisure.

If that didn't help, rename the *.xlbOLD back to *.xlb.

But something else that's loading when excel starts could be the culprit.

Chip Pearson has some instructions for finding problems at:
http://www.cpearson.com/excel/StartupErrors.htm

Essentially, you're going to move stuff out of your XLStart folder and uncheck
everything under Tools|Addins. (But keep track!)

Then one by one, you'll add one back and restart excel to see if that caused the
problem.

Once you find the problem, you'll have to decide if it's something you need to
keep (reinstall??) or something you can dump and forget about.

File|open one of the files that had problems.
