Error 0x80070643 on trying to install new security updates

In seeking to install four of the eight recent security updates for Microsoft
Office 2003, I got the following message, after four attempts:

Update for Outlook 2003 Junk Email Filter (KB919031)
Security Update for Office 2003 (KB914455)
Security Update for Office 2003 (KB917151)
Security Update for Excel 2003 (KB918419)

All had the following Error Code:

Error Code: 0x80070643

Has anyone else experienced this difficulty? Is there a solution for this
problem? (Bear in mind that I'm a simple end-user, not a trained technician!)

Dear TaurArian [MS-MVP],

I managed, by dint eventually of taking the third option indicated on
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=903772, namely, removing Office Professional
Edition 2003 and then reinstalling, to install all but the following updates:

Security Update for Office 2003 (KB917151)
Security Update for Office 2003 (KB914455) (English version)

Repeated attempts, for instance, using the Fullfile and single instalment
options suggested by the site, were unsuccessful.

Any further suggestions as to how to install these items?

verify if OSE.exe exists and if it is activated ? If not, copy it from CDROM
and active it

I had the same problem with this update...searched and searched and finally
found the following article: http://support.microsoft.com/?id=884298 which
contains instructions to modify some registry values. I followed the steps
exactly and was immediately able to successfully install the troublesome
updates. Hope this helps.

Well, it took me awhile but I solved the problem 100% (thanks for all of the
MVP's out there).

Basically, I followed the last option in the Knowledge Base. I uninstalled
Office completely (Office Pro 2003), then reinstalled the whole thing
completely including all of the updates. I was actually surprised as it went
quite smoothly and took only about 30 minutes.

Presto, all of the latest updates were installed without a hitch and
everything works perfectly. After all of the hours of reading, researching
and messing around, a half hour of white knuckling did the trick.
My 2 cents.
