Like many others, I have been having problems downloading email thru outlook
2003. I need to go to the website to clear off the spam, as opposed to
letting a program do it. It basically makes outlook not a useful program
except for writing emails. I have searched the web and read microsoft's
"fix" 813514. Nothing works. I am not sure, but this may have begun after
installing sp2 to my XP professional OS. There is no doubt that this is
being caused by spam messages, but, but this only ocurred infrequently before
the last few weeks, and i would prefer to deal with the spam as opposed to
outlook freezing the download process. I believe it is a bug in the SP2, and
there are hints of this in some of the microsoft postings. Microsoft, what is
the story, and shuold I uninstall SP2?

<snip>

I had a similar problem.
I was able to use a web based mail reader and get the "BAD" message.

virus scan enabled and error 0x800ccc0f after a long wait

virus scan not enabled and error 0x8004210a after a long wait
My outlook now works fine.

I called Microsoft and they said::::::::

PROBLEM:

Unable to download some e-mails through a POP3 client, (Outlook or Outlook
Express). The client hangs until it times out.

CAUSE:

The messages that are not downloadable do not contain a proper POP3Tail, or
termination sequence "<CRLF>.<CRLF>" as per RFC 1939. So, the client never
sees the termination sequence and therefore cannot continue to download
other messages.

RESOLUTION:

Using REGEDT32, add a Dword value to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\POP3SVC\Parameters\Chec
kPop3Tail

Set the value to "1".

Thanks, but I do not have this sequence in my XP professional registry.

Thanks it looks like this worked!

Cocoli
You are very welcome.....but the thanks go to Microsoft.
They said they would publish this fix if enough people complained.
At least they did not charge me for calling.

Ummm, if this worked it was only a coincidence. That registry value is for
the POP3 service that is part of the Exchange server, and is set on the
server itself, not on the client. I wrote the POP3 code in Outlook 2002
and 2003, and can tell you that it does not look at this registry value.

Jeff,
In mine and apparently Cocoli's case making this registry change allowed the
"BAD/malformed" messages to come in without stalling on the error.
I noticed this same feature in Outlook express on an older machine.
