error 1304

My pc runs Windows XP Professional. On top of this I have
installed Office XP. Everything was running well until
last week when, for no reason that I could think of, when
I fired up Word or Excel I got a message telling me the
system was searching the CD Drive for a file called
mso.dll. I have tried repairing Office but that has
failed. Now when I try to reinstall I get an error 1304
pointing to mso.dll in the Office10 subdirectory. The
message aslso asks if I have rights to that directory (As
supervisor I have). I have discovered that my pc was
virused and I have cleaned it up. I still cannot install
Office. Interestingly I ran defrag and it reported that it
couldnt defrag mso.dll, and when I searched for the file
to delete it the system could not find it. I cant find it
listed anywhere either. I am at my wits end. The microsoft
suggestion that the CD drive or media could be at fault
seems off the mark to me as I had already installed
successfully and was running normally. Any help or
suggestions would be gratefully received. Thanks, Andrew

Andrew,

I have done everything but turn my computer upside down to get around this error. Someone suggested unloading Norton's or McAfee.... don't know if you want to try that before loading your software. I think this is a new virus myself. Keep me posted if you find a solution.
