Error 1402 when trying to install Office sp2

I get an error 1402 setup cannot open
HKEY_local_machine\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\Run\optionalcomponets\MSFS
when trying to install Office Service Pack 2. Tried reinstalling and
repairing software. I get the same error when trying to do this. What do I
need to do?

After posting here I kept searching the Web and found a place where the fix
was to check for permissions by right-clicking MSFS. Turns out there were no
permissions. In the fix, it was stated to list Everyone, so that is what I
did. Tried to install again and this time the same error code, but IMAIL was
listed as the problem. So, I did the same thing in that folder as well as
the MAPI folder. These are all under
HKEY_local_machine\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\Run\optionalcomponets\.
Then installed Office sp2 without any problems. I guess, somehow the
permissions got removed. Thanks for the reply to my question.

Charlie,

Thank you for posting this. (I actually created an account just to reply to you!).

I was trying to upgrade my MS Office 2003 and MS One Note 2003 to SP3 and changing my permissions to "everyone" was the solution.

I also received a 1402 error as you described.

Once I changed the permissions to "everyone" I was able to proceed with my upgrade to SP3 immediately.

Unfortunately none of the solutions posted by MS worked (are we surprised though? :)

Thanks again!
Linda C.
