Error 16008 causing system-level corruption

Intermittent but vexing problem.
Occasionally after waking from sleep, Entourage displays error code
16008 and loses all functionality. All other open Office programs
become unusable and no document saving is possible. Cannot save open
docs in non-MS programs. Upon restarting spotlight no longer works. As
well, attempting to use the "preview" function in column view will hang
the finder for 3-5 minutes before the file preview is displayed. During
the hang, Console displays the log error "Can't checkin with server
named com.apple.metadata.mdserver, error 0x10000004" again & again. The
finder will eventually crash. The corruption is system-level as a new
user will experience the same problem. The only fix at this point seems
to be an Archive & Install. The workaround would seem to be to not
leave Entourage open when sleeping the G5 or switch to Mail.
I am running OS 10.4.1 on a PM G5/2.5. The disabling error 16008
occurred in Panther as well but did not corrupt the finder or search
features.
I have tried complete reinstalls of Office, every type of MUD
maintenance routine, repair permissions, Disk 1st Aid, Diskwarrior,
TTP4, FSCK, cache-cleaners, font-fixers, pref fixers, zap PRAM/NVRAM,
etc. etc. No go. Searching this forum for error 16008 yields many
instances of it's occurrence but almost no effective solutions.
Any ideas?

How about System Preferences/Spotlight/Privacy, and add the Office 2001
Identities folder (in your MUD folder) plus any earlier Office X Identities
folder too.

This might at least put it back to how it behaved in Panther.

There is absolutely no reason why a desktop computer with a modern monitor
should ever need to sleep. Go to System Preferences/Energy Saver/Sleep. Put
the system to sleep Never. You can set Display Sleep to 15 minutes or
whatever you want, and Hard Disk sleep when possible. (Worth turning that
off too if nothing improves.) If Sleep really is the problem, just turn it
off.

Sorry Paul. Iam using Office 2004. I will try your suggestion re
Spotlight. I use sleep because it achieves the highest energy-saving
state without shutting down and wakens very quickly. Thanks for the
reply.
