Given that I exchange a lot of e-mail with Windows users, I find that a good
enough reason to use an anti-virus program. Contrary to the link you posted,
I find that Intego VirusBarrier uses a negligible amount of CPU and RAM.
YMMV.

The comments on an article posted by Chris Breen indicate the same opinion
you describe.
