"Error 5011" Security settings in Internet Explorer cannot log on via Office Project 2003

Rob

Any ideals?

"Error 5011 - You cannot be logged on because your security setting
in Internet Explorer do not allow per-session cookies" when
connecting to Project Server 2003 using Office Project 2003
\Collaborate\Project Center or Resource Center. However, the second I
open up Internet Explorer and minimize it, I can connect with np
problem using Office Project's Collaboration.

I could access Project Server's PWA through the browser or Outlook
2003 without any security errors, but I cannot access the server via
Office Project without first opening up Internet Explorer.

All servers (Project Server w/SP1), SQL 2000 (SP3a) and workstations(XP
w/SP2, Office Project w/SP1) are up to the most recent Service Packs,
fixes and patches. All Internet Settings are allowed to pass all
cookies.

Firewall settings on your machine maybe? SP2's big change was personal firewall, remember. Maybe it's blocking Project Pro.

Earl,

I can have Internet Explorer closed, open up Computer
Management\Services and minimize the Services screen and open Project
Pro - And it Works !

Any more ideals..

How about running a repair of your project pro installation. Something is hosed and it doesn't sound good.

I can think of no good reason that the services applet being open would have any bearing on how project pro works.

If you do decide to reinstall first try a repair. If that doesn't help uninstall, reboot then reinstall. Hope that helps.

Earl - I built a new server (Production) without any application errors
and still get the same results. It seems to be related to the client.
Everything seems to work just fine except except this issue opening up
IE or Services first before launching projecct pro.

Rob,

I was suggesting that you reinstall project professional on the workstation, not the project server. Have you tried to repair or reinstall project pro?

This is really bizarre. Sorry it's taking so long to figure out. Do you happen to have a support contract with M$? This might be one for the kids in Redmond.

Earl,

This problem occurs on all my clients and most are new Project Pro
installs. Anyways I really appreciate all your help, I guess we can
live with this until I find a solution.

I have a couple of questions for you Earl that maybe you can answer if
you don't mind. First of all, I am new to Project Server without any
formal training except for the Documentation that comes with the
Project Server 2003 CD. Also, we have no consulting or Microsoft
Support.

1) When I create a project on project pro the Gannt chart displays all
details such as resources assigned to a certain task on the right side
of the gannt bars. I also have custom fields on the left side of the
bars. I save and publish "All Information" to the server. I go to
project center or PWA and all details on the gannt chart disappears. Is
this normal? Is there a solution where I can view everything on PWA as
if I were viewing it on project pro?

2) I want all domain users to log on to PWA using their domain\user
account and all outside customers to log on anonymously using the
project server authentication or project server accounts. On IIS I have
both Anonymous and Integrated Windows Authentication checked. I do not
want to create domain accounts for external users. Now when I try to
access PWA it prompts me for a project server account logon. Anonymous
access seems to over ride everything no matter how I have the server or
client configured. I don't want to create all domain users a project
server account. Is there a solution for this?

Should I post these questions? Do you have any docs or other resources
besides Microsoft Support that you can point me to? Your assistance is
very greatly appreciated and once again thanks for all the help.

Rob,

Sorry we're not making progress on the problem. I'll try to shed some light on your other questions.

Q1) Views in PWA and project pro have no relationships to each other. They are entirely independent except for the fact that they generally access the same underlying data. The views however are independent.

To get the same view in PWA as you get in project pro you need to go into PWA>Admin>Manage Views and create a custom view. Unfortunately, adding text to the gantt bars is not something you'll be able to do in PWA at this time. Sorry.

Q2) Your outside users should use project server accounts to login. I don't believe this requires that you change IIS to allow anonymous access. Anonymous access is essentially an unauthenticated mechanism and could compromise the security of your installation.

You don't have to create domain accounts for project server login accounts. You need to make sure project server is set to mixed mode allowing both windows and project server accounts. Then for the project server accounts you manage those all within the project web access administration tools PWA>Admin>Manage Users and Groups.

Turn off your anonymous access on IIS, turn on mixed mode auth in project server and setup your project server accounts as noted above and see if that improves your situation. Hope that helps.

Earl -

1) I have already created Custom Views. On the custom view I created I
used the Field Name:Text1 in the Column Definition box and gave it a
Title named "Due To" which shows up fine in project pro. I publish this
project and in PWA I add a custom view with the Text1 field. I go to
project center and click on the project and the column retains the
Text1 name. I guess like you mentioned PWA and project pro have no
relationship to each other but only the data. Can the field name Text1
be modified in PWA?

2) If I don't check the anonymous box in IIS the Microsoft log on
screen pops up for users not in the domain when they try to access PWA.
I do not want to give them access to the domain. Is there a way they
can access PWA without getting prompt the log on screen and they go
straight to the Project Server log on?

Rob,

Custom views or even default view customization for PWA starts in the enterprise global template - which you modify via project professional. Go figure?!? :) Is that how you're doing this?

If not, and assuming you're a project server administrator, start project pro, go to Tools>Enterprise Options>Open Enterprise Global. Now go to Tools>Customize>Enterprise Fields... and do your field customization there. When you do the field customization you should rename the field and make the rest of the changes and the field should end up saved to the server with that name.

Then when you work with your view customization in PWA >Admin > Manage Views you should see the EnterpriseCustomText1 with the name you gave it in parentheses. The name in parentheses is what shows up in our views. Hope that helps.

I'll have to think a little more about the IIS issue.
