Error 57E?

This is not very specific. The better the description of your problem the
better chance someone will be able to give you an accurate answer.

I have tried to install windows updates through windows update for office
2003 and it fails to install the updates with error code 57E. this is
apparently common across both office 2003 and office 2007 so would seem to be
a vista compatibility problem. the update(s) im trying to install are 'Update
for Outlook Junk Email Filter 2003 (KB942571)' and 'Update for Windows Mail
Junk Email Filter [October 2007] (KB905866)' just in case its similar for
others and its just these updates?

I'm having the same problem with Office XP Service Pack 3 update which was
downloaded by Windows Update. When I try to install it, it first asks for
the original install disk and after I put the CD in the player, it comes up
with the failure to install message with Error 57E. This must be a problem
with Vista as I am running Vista Ultimate which is also causing problems with
my video card. I installed the Microsoft Hotfixes which were supposed to fix
the video problem & that didn't work either.

57E is the specific Error code the the update routine gives on failing to
update Asking for help results in 20 or so hypthetical specific possibilities
which are of little help.

Eric I think this is pretty specific. I get up in the morning and find that
Windows has updates for me to installed. (They download at 3:00 a.m.) And I
try to install them. However none will installed because of an error code of
57E.

And you can search all you want, but I can never find any doc's concerning
an error code of this nature.

What can we do?

Did anybody get 57E resolved by now??? I have bunches and bunches of failed
update installations because of the "not specific" 57E, and I am tired of
looking at the update symbol and getting the message to install when all that
is going to happen is failure. Did anybody out there get real help from MS?

This is a repeated error code which despite Vista SP1 being installed has not
cured my problem. However I can offer this slight bit of salvation which has
done me well over the past 12 months. Should any updates fail to down load
and all your favourite error codes suddenly manifest themselves - do the
following. Go into microsoft support and type in the download, ie KB12345, it
may take a while to find the right branch of Microsoft, but in every occasion
I have found what I have been looking for. I hope this helps.

The 57E problem started happening on all automatic updates on Februar
11 -- but we just noticed it.

Spend last night on the phone with Microsoft PCSafety support. The
invoked a chat session, took over the computer and sort of worked thei
way around, turning off security, de-installing drivers and generall
making strange actions. I asked them to restore the computer as it wa
when they found it, no luck. I was able to get it stable - with n
recent updates - in another 2 ours.

The problem is mainly with Office, because that is where most of th
updates are. However, the problem (57E and 1406) occurs with othe
updates when offered my Microsoft.

Looks like an installer/registry problem. Did yours start at
specific time also?

Has anyone tried a full restore to get rid of the problem?

Was the installer updated last February?

Thank you. /St

Cannot create a top-level child window.

Which edition of Windows and what Service Pack level is it at ?

What toolbars are installed ?

The issue may be related to a toolbar blocking popups or other security
related software that blocks popups.

What is the installed antivirus/security suite/anti-malware software ?

Thank you for the reply.

I run AVG/free and Google toolbar. Both were removed during th
diagnostic state of the problerm

The last fix to Windows vista Home Premium was Microsoft .net Securit
Service Pack 2 in October of 2009.

Before that, many updates were failing. After that, about 9 in 1
failed with no pattern that I can see.

Before October 2009, Windows Defender service updates succeeded.

In September 2009, several security updates for Windows and Jav
succeeded, but all others failed.

In May 2009, there was a string of 12 straight successes ending wit
"Security Update for 2007 Office System" We run office 2003.

Most everything in April afteer 4/11/2009 failed.

From April 10th back, all succeeded. The last success was:

Definition Update for Windows Defender. Several of these succeeded i
a row and there were no failures before the defender updates.

I think I need to be defended from defender??????????????????? /St

I have uploaded a capture of the machine's update log showing the
various failures related to the 57E error. I don't know how to get a
text version - sorry.

I can't see if the file uploaded - tried it twice, says 100%, but I'm
not sure it is uploaded. Sorry.
