"Error! Bookmark not defined." in cross-references after printing

I have a problem with Word 2003.

If I try to print the the document, all cross-references to figures, tables
or endnotes will change to text "Error! Bookmark not defined."

Also print preview does the same thing. And this text will be in the prints
too.

I wouldn't want to manually change all of them since I probably have couple
of hundred of those (my text is more than 100 pages).

Actually the cross-references to figures and tables will have text:

'Error! Reference source not found.'

And cross references to endnotes have the text which I mentioned in the
first post:

(Error! Bookmark not defined.)

Cross-references are fields which depend on (hidden) bookmarks in the
text. The error messages indicate that those bookmarks are missing.

Generally, recreating the cross-references/bookmarks would be a manual
task, I'm afraid.

However, you could try using Undo (Ctrl+Z), possibly several times, and
see if this lets you restore functioning cross-references. This assumes
that you haven't saved *and* closed the document since the error
occurred.

At least, this procedure should be able to restore the correct *display*
of cross-references; trouble-shooting could then continue from there.

I tried to recreate cross-references and bookmarks I have on my document. The
problem remains. Some of the parts are ok, but mysteriously when I correct
some cross-references new 'Error'-messages will appear in various
cross-references.

Let me explain the situation a bit.

I have references to literature as endnotes. (Insert - reference - footnotes
- location:endnotes)

I have multiple references to same endnotes so after the first endnote
reference they are made as cross-references (Insert - Reference -
cross-references - reference type: Endnote) to those endnotes (if you would
add another endnote a new number will be made to endnotes)

Then I have also cross-references to Figures and Tables. Most of the Figure
and Table text include cross-reference to the endnotes as well.

This is strange.

Have you tried Ctrl+A to select the whole document, Shift+Left arrow to
deselect the final paragraph mark, and then copying and pasting into a
new document? This should get rid of any document corruption (see
http://word.mvps.org/faqs/apperrors/corruptdoc.htm).

Another thing to consider: Are there an add-ins installed (that could
possibly mess with the bookmarks)?

By the way, please don't change the subject, as this makes/can make it
more difficult to keep track of the thread (depending on how you are
viewing the newsgroups).

Tried pasting into new document and problem still remains.

I checked and there is no add-ins either.

I also removed all the cross-references from captions. Didn't help.

Now I noticed that the Table of Contents will get those bookmark errors also.

All the references are ok, only cross-references will get errors. When I
correct some cross-references to endnotes, some of the cross-references to
Figures will get errors and vice versa. I don't see any connection between
them. Strange indeed!
