Error: Cannot find Exchange Server

Mr Fabulous

I have a client that has about 10 users on his network - all running various
versions of Outlook and connecting to an Exchange Server ONLY for shared
calendar purposes. Each client is also set up to receive POP email from
their ISP. Several times throughout the day the users will receive the
message that "Outlook cannot find the Exchange Server." They don't all
receive the message at once, in fact, I can just about always duplicate it by
exiting Outlook and then launching it immediately as soon as it closes out
all the way. Most of the time Outlook communicates flawlessly with the
Exchange Server but the fact that it happens at random times during the day
to all of the users is very frustrating. I've swapped out the NIC's in each
machine, swapped out the NIC in the server, replaced the hub with a switch,
downloaded ALL the updates for Office AND Windows, replaced the cabling, even
relocated the server. Nothing works. I need your help!

This is not an Outlook issue per se - it sounds more like a networking one.
What version of Exchange? What is the client OS version? What version of
Outlook, also?

thanks for your reply. The server is running Windows Standard Server 2003
Small Business (so whatever version of Exchange comes with that). The
clients are running a mixture of Win98, W2K and WinXP. Also, the Outlook
varies as well. Outlook 97, 2000 and 2003.

OK - you need DNS to be setup properly... All servers and workstations
should specify *only* the internal AD-integrated DNS server's IP address
(i.e., your SBS server's LAN IP) in their network settings. The
AD-integrated DNS server should be set up with forwarders to your ISP's DNS
servers for external resolution and/or use root hints.

Since you have Win9x, you also need WINS installed/configured - in your DHCP
scope settings supply the WINS IP and choose 0x8 for hybrid mode.

OK, Thanks. DNS is set correctly but I do not have Wins installed. I'll
give that a try and let you know what happens.

Great. You need WINS if you have WinNT/9x/ME clients.....and also in some
other situations.
