Error code 3170

Hello,

I have been unable to get Entourage to connect to the internet to send
and receive mail or news. I saw the advice that you posted to another
with the same error code 3170 (pasted below). The internet is connected
to this computer and runs similar programs, like Netscape, fine. I have
gone through all the suggestions listed below plus: deleting Entourage &
reloading, deleting Office X and reloading, rebuilding the database -
both ways, establishing multiple email accounts at different servers (to
eliminate the ISP settings problem), installed all the upgrades, tried
with the firewall on and off, and rechecked the account setups.

I've run out of things to check, except for one item. I seem to recall
during the initial installation there was a setup screen that referenced
using Entourage in an online versus offline mode. However I don't
recall the details.

Please help,
Kelly

It's possible that your ISP installed a filter that is keeping you from
accessing any outside servers on port 25. In that case, you'd need to
contact your ISP and get the settings to use their SMTP server.

If that's not the case, first download and install the Office X 10.1.2
update, free from Microsoft.
<http://www.microsoft.com/mac/DOWNLOAD/OFFICEX/OfficeX_1012.asp>

I'd go through the general checklist of troubleshooting your account setup.
If the suggestions do not work, try deleting your account in Tools ->
Accounts and then re-creating it.

See if you can send mail using the same settings in any other mail clients
on the computer (like Apple Mail or Netscape). If not, try disabling any
firewalls on your computer to see if they are causing the problem.

I have been unable to get Entourage to connect to the internet to send

Is the error a negative error? We have some errors and solutions listed
here.

<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/errors.html>

Determining where the error is originating is important. Read the info at
the top for that.

Next understand that error messages are fluid. I've seen different text for
the same number. Often error numbers that are close together will give help
in finding a solution.
Error -3170

"LDAP Server Error: The specified server could not be found.":

This is because none of the installed Directory Services are still active. Go
to Mail and News Preferences, then click the "Compose" tab. Uncheck the option
to "Automatically check names when sending messages".

Also, go to Tools -> Accounts, click the "Directory Service" tab, then delete
all of the pre-installed servers.

Error -3171

"A network error has occurred (-3171)."

We have limited info on this error. Errors around that number are all Open
Transport Error numbers. Entourage is just passing them along.

Check out directions for using tcpflow.

<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/help/send_receive/test_network.html>

Then when you call your ISP you'll have some info that might help them help
you.

Error -3170 is:

-3170 kOTBadNameErr

According to <http://www.usc.edu/isd/doc/os/mac/consult/oserrors.html>

Not that that means much to me! (possibly a problem with the DNS server?)

As to offline/online, you can switch between the two under the entourage
menu. I doubt that this is the problem though, as when in offline mode
Entourage will prompt you to connect if it needs to - it won't just error
out

Yes the error code is -3170 The specified server could not be found. This
error code happens whenever I try to connect Entourage to the internet.
Other programs on the same computer connect to the net fine.
