Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Processor: Intel The file sent to me seems to be a 97 to 2004 version. I cannot understand why there would be any difficulty in opening a previous version document of word in mac 2008. I have tried changing the .doc file to a .docx but it doesn't work. Hoping for some help, thanks.

How are you "changing" the file if you can't open it? Simply altering the
extension does *not* change the file type & makes matters worse by
misinforming the program as to what type of file it actually is.

Make sure your installation of Office is fully updated (12.2.4), repair disk
permissions & restart.

If you still have a problem perhaps it isn't actually a Word 97-2004 file
after all. It could also be attributable to how the file was 'sent' to you.

thanks, 12.2.4 update was successful and restarted prior. the file was sent as.doc and appears ok. Anyway I just used text edit to get the text which is all that was needed. But I thought this problem should be fixed properly with Microsoft.

Frankly, I don't think there is a problem for Microsoft to fix. Word
2008 does read prior file versions. What's required are that the these
older files are in fact proper files. Just becuase they have a doc
extension does not make the file contents correct and useable. Could
have been made by anything and could have been corrupted during email
and disk to disk copies.

Frankly I do...I can open these files with MS office on Windows and also using Pages but not on Office for Mac. So, frankly, you are wrong. Sorry!
