Error exporting data from Access to Excel

I get the message "Errors were detected in "xxxx.xls' but
microsoft excel was able to open the file by making the
repairs listed below. save the file to make the repairs
permanent.

Then in the dialog box I see

"damage to the file was so extensive that repairs were not
possible"

If I resave the file with the same name or any name I do
not get this message. Anyone have an idea of how to get
rid of this problem?
