Error installing Office 2000 Update 1

B

Bill

I have installed Word and Excel from Office 2000 on a Dell netbook
running Win7 Starter Edition. When I try to install update 1a I get to
the point where the Downloading dialog appears then an error dialog
appears stating that the update did not complete successfully and
directing me to the log file "Office 2000 SR-1 Setup(0009).txt". At the
end of the log file the following error appears.

Error: The file,
C:\Users\Bill\AppData\Local\Temp\sr1patch\{0DC0F122-1B1C-11D4-AED6-00C04
F022C53}, has an invalid size.

I realize this is a very old version but if anyone can suggest how to
resolve this problem I would appreciate it.

No more updates for 2000, sorry. MS has stopped supporting it.

Bill, can you post the error message and any number that it might have
(usually a 4-digit number, if there is one). It's a very old version of
Office, and no longer supported (and may not run under Windows 7), but let's
see if it's something less obvious than that.

Thanks Susan. The following is the complete contents of the install log

Hi, Bill,

Well, I wasn't actually asking for the log file, because I'm not very adept
at reading them, despite this information:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/259420. However, by posting it, someone else
may be able to decipher.

:)

The "popup" error you get during installation that told you to view the log
file is what I was asking for...what was the exact error message and any
number that came along with it, if there was one?

Do you know if your Windows 7 is 32-bit or 64-bit?

B

Bill

Well, the reason I posted the log file is that the error dialog
provides no information at all.:( Here is the exact text of the error
dialog.
------------
Microsoft Office 2000 SR-1 Update di not complete succesfully. For
assistance, contact Microsft Technical Support.

See the log file: Office 2000 SR-1 Setup(0009).txt
------------
Note that the number in the log file name is not an error code. It
increments by one each time I run the update setup.exe.

I am retired now and my need for Office is limited so I am not going to
spend several hundred dollars to upgrade. If I can't find a solution to
this I'll either use it without the service packs or take a look at
Open Office.

Thanks again for your help.

Again. Microsoft removed all download possibilities of SR1 and SR1a. You need to
find a 3rd party site that still has that download.

You are able to download the 165kb file of SR1a from MS but when you open that file
the SR1a download is not existent as you are finding out

P

Bill

I forgot to mention that this is because of the settlement that the DOJ and SUN did
with Microsoft over the illegal use of the Java platform in Windows 2000. Even 3rd
party downloads will be difficult because they can be sued by the DOJ,Sun and
Microsoft.
Time to give up Office 2000 Bill. Your only choice is if you have saved that SR1A
file somewhere or one of your friends did

I have the complete SR1A file but it will not run either. The error it
gives is that it cannot find the file DATA1.MSI. There is no file named
DATA1.MSI but there is a file named DATA1.MSP. I tried renaming
DATA1.MSP to DATA1.MSI but that did not help. Any suggestions?

As I said to Susan, I am retired and spending several hundred dollars
to buy a new version of Office is not in the cards. I'll either run
without the SPs or take a look at Open Office.

Thanks for your help.

This issue keeps coming up and has been fully discussed.
You need a third-party hosting location for a file that MS originally
provided and has since removed.
Do a search on this site for recent postings for Office 2000 update and you
can read all about it.

You need the file O2KSR1aDL.EXE which you can find, for now, here:
http://www.filewatcher.com/m/O2KSR1aDL.EXE.53816504.0.0.html
.... and there is one kind soul who's offered to host it if it's ever not here
...... again.... see the earlier postings.

And.... I don't really think I'd worry about that potential "lawsuit".
There are really some outrageous answers to this post... unbelievable!

R

Rick Sparks

This is outrageously WRONG.

Bill.... I've given you the link you need in one of my answers further down
this thread.... get the English one..... it works just fine.
For a full background on this, see the post
Subject: Error: Microsoft Office 2000 sr1 Update did not..
where the last post (as of now) is 12/10/09.

Then.... all you really need on top of that is SP3, which is still available.

Worked perfectly. Updates 1 and 3 installed successfully and I am
burning everything to a DVD so I'll have it for the future.

Thanks Rick.

You're welcome! ....I'm glad it worked out.
You bought the software; you should always be able to use it.... it doesn't
'wear out'

( I'm guessing some on this forum get a commission for new product sales ;> )

S

Susan Ramlet

Though they're provided by Microsoft, these are peer support forums (you
rarely but occasionally see Microsoft staff out here), so the commission
thing is unlikely....but there is a nice free suite of applications called
"OpenOffice" (www.openoffice.org), which is compatible with Microsoft Office
files, and has a very similar/understandable interface.

It's kinda like the old car metaphor: if you're a collector, you work on
cars yourself and keep them running beyond their supported warranty and
functionality. Hobbyists such as myself are okay with doing that with
software, but the companies that make it are always going to try to give you
more functionality and can only support so many past versions. It's a
for-profit industry!

So, if you want to make a statement against this, find alternatives, such as
"open-source" software, (like OpenOffice). I'm a fan of Microsoft Office,
but OpenOffice is an excellent alternative if you don't.

Saw the exchange about SR1A and from a search found the following:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...03-7633-45b4-ab96-795ee656f2a2&displayLang=en
which is supposed to be the SR1A download page.
I'm completely 'non-tech' so hope I'm not intruding. Have a separate
2000 OSB problem and will seek an assist.

I know there aren't MS staff here ....but there are MS MVPs and they tend to
be MS-centric.... and.... I'm not sure what else to think when advice is
given by some that is consistently wrong on this exact issue.

MS has removed files that make MS Office 2000 perfectly useable and good.
There's no reason these files can't be continued to be used to reach SP3
functionality.

MS Office 2000 is still a perfectly reasonable choice for those who want to
use it. I'd agree with you that openoffice.org is a valid alternative.

R

Rick Sparks

This is the link that downloads the small file but then will not continue to
download the rest because MS has removed the files. This is the problem that
Bill originally wrote about.
