My apologies for the first blank message! Mike, a year
ago when upgrading from Windows ME to Windows XP and then
reinstalling Office XP on a machine at work, I
encountered the same error. If Mr. Freedman's advice is
not applicable, i.e., you have a version from which it is
legit to upgrade, the only solution that worked for me in
the end was to contact MS tech support. A very helpful
gentleman walked me through a process of, among other
things, editing Registry entries. This solved the
problem. Because I was able to provide the Key info to
show that I had a valid prior version from which to
upgrade and indicated that this was a problem that showed
up only upon installation of Windows XP, I was not
charged for the Tech Support call. I wrote the
instructions down, but regretably, due to an office move,
revamping of a small network, etc., I'm not able to find
the info to share with you.
