Error message about Automation, what does it mean?

I have a form that has a control where I input a reference number into a
control which has a format ABC/___/____ The form is a subform on my main
form. When I try to input into the control I get a message that says:
"The object doesn't contain the Automation object ID. You tried to run a
visual basic procedure to set a property or method for an object. However
the component doesn't make the property or method available for Automation
operations."
What does that mean? If I close the message it appears that I can carry on
with the input.
