Error message after making an Index

I

Irma

Hello,
after making an index for a (large) document, saving it and trying opening
it again I get the following error message: (in Dutch I will try to translate
it into English)
'Not defined error
Location: Part: /word/footer1.xml Line: 2 Column: 583'
and I am not able to open the document any more!

Has anybody an idea what is happening here? A solution?
Any help would be great.
Greetings from the Netherlands,
Irma

Sounds nasty. Try using Open and Repair (click the arrow beside Open in the
Open dialog and choose Open and Repair).

Thank you for your reply Suzanne
but..............I don't have this option, I don't even have an arrow beside
open!
I use Vista Business, Office 2007, any info in this?

You do have one. File | Open, select the file and then press the arrow
attached to the OPEN button and choose Open and Repair.

Terry,
I think I found what you mean.
I have of course the Dutch version and here I have an option (translated
something like): 'restore last version'.
If this is the option you mean it's fine but this doesn't solve my
problem.........not being able to make an index.

thank you,
Irma

I don't see anything like "Restore last version" on the English dropdown
list. Are you sure you're looking at the right dropdown? It should include
"Open," "Open Read-Only," "Open as Copy," "Open in Browser," "Open with
Transform," and "Open and Repair."

I am sorry but no, I don't have all these options!
I use Office 2007 Student Version, maybe that's the reason?
I really don't know.

Please forgive me my enormous stupidity...........I have found it!!
Will try this option but again...........it doesn't solve my problem with
the index :)

Suzanne,
I tried this repair option (of course I work with a copy of my work) but
Word isn't able to repair the file with the index and I get the same error
message.
What next? Help!

Make a COPY of the .docx and rename it as a ZIP file. Now unzip it by
double-clicking. One of the constituent file components should be a
footer1.xml file. Delete it. Rename the zip file as a docx. Now you should
be able to open it, only you will have to recreate the footers.

If that doesn't work, you will have to find an xml guru who can open
Footer1.xml, go to line 2 column 583 and mend the error. (Just to be clear,
I am not an xml guru and you may have to call Microsoft for a fix.)
