error message in Word 97

I must have been unclear- sorry - I can open the document
once I click cancel - I do not get the error message when
I open up Word program and then open up the documents -
it only happens when I click on to the document from my
desktop or my document or a folder somewhere on the hard
drive

Try reregistering Word. Click Start | Run and type:

winword /r

Note that there is a space before the forward slash. Word will not start,
but its association with the .doc. and .dot file types will be reestablished
in the Windows Registry.
