Error Message "MS Word Needs to Close"

I am receiving an error message every time I open up a
Word document. The message says, "Microsoft Word has
encountered a problem and needs to close." It offers a
checkbox to automatically recover the document, or not.
And it offers a option of sending an error report, or not.

I have Office XP Standard Edition.

This is really annoying and has happened frequently - not
just on one particular document, but on many different
Word documents.

If you have had a similar problem, how did you fix it?
