Error Message on startup ("needs to be repaired")

Hi all.

Hope someone recognizes this one. We are running Access97 on a Novell
network, and for the past few years it has run pretty smoothly.
Yesterday morning one of our staff tried to open the "intake" database
and got this message:

"The database ‘J:\Intake.mdb' needs to be repaired or isn't a database
file. You or another user may have unexpectedly quit Microsoft
access while a Microsoft access database was open. Do you want
Microsoft access to attempt to repair the database?"

So we said "YES" and we got this message:

"The database ‘J:\Intake.mdb' can't be repaired or isn't a Microsoft
database file."

I then created a new database and tried to import tables from
‘J:\Intake.mdb' into it. I got the following error message:

"Unrecognized database format ‘J:\Intake.mdb' "

Can anyone tell me how to fix what is wrong, or at least how to
recover the data in the Intake database?

Thank you

FWIW the first thing to do is to make a copy.

You can try Jetcomp which might be able to repair it. For more info
on that and other options see the Corruptions FAQ at my website.

Thanks so much, jetcomp did work partially; I can now open the
database in Access2000. Unfortunately I need to convert it back to
Access97 and the "Tools" dropdown menu (actually most of the others as
well) has disappeared. I need it to "Convert to prior access version"
. It is there if I open another database. Can you help?

Wierd. This sounds like one of those partially converted MDBs which
I've seen myself.

I'd try importing all the objects into a new MDB and then you should
be able to convert to prior access version.
