Error message System exception:Access Violation

I recently had to install a new hard drive and all my software. I was able
to save all the data files, including the files I used to create my web site.
However, when I try to open one of the files to edit them, I get this
message. What am I doing wrong or what do I need to do in order to open my
old files?

Hi Mark,

There are various type of access violations. The most common is memory do you know which you experienced?

Thanks for the response. Unfortunately, I don't know. This is the error
message in it's entirety.

Mark, I have exactly the same problem, although got there slightly
differently. I copied my web from one machine to another, and now can open
the web, but whenever I open any of the pages I get "System Exception: Access
Violation". I have tried a number of solutions suggested here to no avail!

Hopefully someone can either tell me how to copy a website from one machine
to another without encountering this problem, or can tell me how to get past
this useless error message.

If you have the site hosted on the internet and the remote server has the FP extensions, then open
the site directly on the remote server in FP (File Menu | Open Web / Site), then use File Menu |
Publish Web / Site back to your local machine.

A FP web / site should always be published from one location to another.

If I "Publish" the site to disk, would that work? I just figured that if I
wanted it on another machine, publishing it wouldn't provide Frontpage with
all the info it needed. I assume FP deciphers the info it needs right from
the html itself?

Publishing is the only way to maintain the FP web and navigation structure. The best option is to
publish the site to a server that has the FP extensions, then open the site on that server in FP on
the new/other PC in FP and publish a copy down to that machine.

If you need to move the site between local machines and you can't publish, then zip the folder that
holding the web, copy to CD, etc. and then restore it to the same location in the file system on the
new/other machine.

The second option you give is exactly what I did. I even tried the MS
solution suggestion to use xcopy to avoid permissioning issues. Nothing
worked. I guess I will try the other option you suggest (it will just take
forever downloading). Hopefully it will work!

OK, I did as instructed, and downloaded the page from the server to my
machine, but it did not open with all the Frontpage "features" and was
missing borders etc. So this did not work (although I don't get the stupid
access violation error message).

The HAS to be a way for me to copy the original web site off my old machine
and load it to my new machine without getting this error!

Any other suggestions???? PLEASE?????

You have to publish the site between locations/machines in order to maintain Themes, shared borders,
navigation.

Does the remote server have the FP extensions, if so open the site on the server in FP and then
publish it to your new machine.

OK, here is what I have tried thus far (to no avail).

1) I have logged into the server from the new machine (server has frontpage
extentsions installed) and logged into the site with Frontpage and published
it to my machine. Borders didn't appear in the site when I logged out and
opened it with FP. So this didn't work.

2) I have used the old machine to:
a) Copy the file structure to disk and load to new machine--get error
"System Exception:Access Violation"
b) Publish site to drive location and then copy to new machine....same error
c) Tried to publish site to CDRW but it wouldn't allow me to do that (don't
recall the error).

On the new machine, I have attempted to correct the access violation error
message by deleting all files in the _vti_pvt folder with an extension of
..lck, then ensuring all files are not set to read only (this was one of MS
solutions suggested). This did nothing.

In the time I've taken to do this, I could probably have recreate the whole
Fing site from scratch. God I HATE MICROSOFT!!!!!!!!!

How about a nice....Site Export function? Or a decent FAQ with answers to
error messages like this one! Perhaps its time to buckle and PAY the
Microsoft clods for phone support!

Frustrated....angry and tired it FP....(maybe that's my problem....perhaps I
should have used a different publication tool in the first place!)
